I have a company in Singapore and plan to set up a representative office in Thailand. However, my friend informed me that if I set up as a representative in Thailand, I cannot generate income. My purpose of setting-up a company in Thailand is to import products from Singapore to trade in Thailand. Can you give me some advice what should I do for this matter?
Panwa: If your purpose of setting-up a company is to import and trade in Thailand; it means that your company will eventually earn income, thus, you cannot set-up a representative office due to representative office only allows some scope of businesses, such as for sourcing of goods for the head office in overseas, marketing, etc. and the company cannot generate income too, same as your friend informed. So for your case, it would be suitable to register a private company instead, with 51% hold by Thai and 49% hold by foreigner, which is the easiest type of company that you can set-up if you would like to carry on your business in Thailand.
